{"id":22990190,"date":"2025-09-01T16:06:52","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T16:06:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dr-rainer-eckert.de\/das-barrierefreiheitsstaerkungsgesetz\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T19:36:38","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T19:36:38","slug":"the-european-accessibility-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dr-rainer-eckert.de\/en\/the-european-accessibility-act\/","title":{"rendered":"The\u00a0European Accessibility Act\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>EAA \u2013 Turning a Legal Requirement into an Opportunity for Retail<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 28 June 2025, a milestone was reached across Europe: In all 27 EU Member States, the&nbsp;European Accessibility Act (EAA)&nbsp;\u2013 formally known as&nbsp;EU Directive 2019\/882&nbsp;\u2013 was transposed into national law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EAA\u2019s full title may sound a little bureaucratic, but the laws derived from it are of huge importance: for&nbsp;people with disabilities, for&nbsp;older customers, and \u2013 not least \u2013 for the&nbsp;retail sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accessibility is no longer a niche topic. It is fast becoming a&nbsp;key competitive factor&nbsp;\u2013 one that determines how accessible, user-friendly and future-proof shops, devices and digital services really are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the purpose of the EAA?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is clear: To ensure&nbsp;consistent accessibility across the EU&nbsp;for products and services, particularly in the field of&nbsp;information and communication technologies (ICT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 28 June 2025 onwards, all new devices placed on the market and any newly launched digital services hosted online must comply with accessibility requirements \u2013 or risk penalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the EU country and the severity of the violation, fines can range from around&nbsp;\u20ac5,000 up to \u20ac900,000&nbsp;\u2013 and in&nbsp;Ireland, even prison sentences may apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What does this mean in practice?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accessibility under the EAA means that&nbsp;self-service terminals and digital services must be designed so that everyone can use them, regardless of physical, sensory or cognitive limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In everyday life, this applies to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>online shops, sales portals and apps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cash machines and payment terminals, as well as ticket vending machines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EFT devices and interactive information kiosks in retail environments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>check-in terminals at airports or order kiosks in quick-service restaurants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>devices such as PCs, laptops, smartphones and e-book readers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At its core, it\u2019s about&nbsp;accessibility, usability and independence.<br>The technical framework is defined by&nbsp;EN 301 549, a European standard specifying requirements such as&nbsp;audio output, tactile controls, visual contrast and clear, simple menu navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How can retailers benefit from the EAA?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EAA may have started as a legal obligation \u2013 but for retailers, it presents a&nbsp;genuine opportunity&nbsp;to reach new customer groups and improve the overall customer experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accessible solutions such as&nbsp;self-service terminals with audio guidance, clear structures and intuitive operation&nbsp;don\u2019t just promote inclusion \u2013 they make shopping&nbsp;easier and more pleasant for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accessible online offerings are&nbsp;easier to find, simpler to navigate&nbsp;and&nbsp;build trust&nbsp;\u2013 not only among people with disabilities, but also with older or less tech-savvy customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And those who act early will be seen as&nbsp;industry leaders, well before their competitors catch up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why a holistic approach matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>True accessibility is not achieved through individual actions alone. It requires a&nbsp;holistic approach to the customer journey&nbsp;\u2013 from online shop design and store layout to signage, checkout areas and payment terminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Retailers who ignore accessibility are effectively turning away a&nbsp;purchasing power of more than 100 million people in Europe. Those who instead&nbsp;engage and include&nbsp;these customers gain loyal clientele and a&nbsp;stronger, more positive brand image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Accessibility means future readiness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Admittedly, the EAA and its national equivalents might sound like another layer of bureaucracy at first.
