It Might Turn Out Well."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>EuroShop 2026 took place almost three months ago now. Once again, it confirmed its position as the leading trade fair for the retail industry (see also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euroshop-tradefair.com\/en\/Media_News\/Press\/Press_material\/EuroShop_2026_Exhibitor_Testimonials\">https:\/\/www.euroshop-tradefair.com\/en\/Media_News\/Press\/Press_material\/EuroShop_2026_Exhibitor_Testimonials<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, the exhibition stands have long been dismantled, many discussions have already been followed up and numerous impressions have unfortunately once again been overshadowed by day-to-day operational business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, this trade fair is still very much on my mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few weeks ago, I was standing in the kitchen with a cup of coffee when someone asked me:<br>\u201cSo? What was your impression of EuroShop 2026?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had to think for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because this EuroShop felt different from the previous nine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was my tenth EuroShop \u2014 but at the same time the first one where I spent three days entirely under my own flag: as a Retail Engineer and independent consultant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And perhaps that was exactly why I experienced the exhibition from a completely different perspective this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Real Momentum Is Now in the Digital Layer of the Store<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In previous years, I mainly focused on Halls 12 to 14 at EuroShop.<br>The areas where much of the \u201cphysical\u201d retail infrastructure is traditionally located:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>shopping trolleys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>entrance and exit systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>customer guidance solutions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shelving systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>merchandising units<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>conveyor checkout counters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>hybrid checkouts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>self-checkout solutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Back then, Halls 4, 5 and 6 were more on the edge of my radar. The walk was long \u2014 and at the time I did not fully understand the significance of many of the solutions presented there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year was different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After more than 50 conversations across three intensive exhibition days, one thing became very clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The real momentum in retail is now happening in the digital layer of the store.<br>And: The topic of \u201cdetecting and preventing theft\u201d is more important than ever. Hardly surprising considering the current shrinkage figures (see also <a href=\"https:\/\/dr-rainer-eckert.de\/en\/inventory-losses-germany-2024-retail-shrinkage\/\">https:\/\/dr-rainer-eckert.de\/en\/inventory-losses-germany-2024-retail-shrinkage\/<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retail 4.0 Is Already Reality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the most interesting discussions revolved around topics such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AI-supported fraud detection using computer vision<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>smart shopping trolleys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>intelligent exit systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>smart POS software<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sensor technologies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>customer tracking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>heatmaps and behavioural analytics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In short:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is all about efficiency, better process control and technologies designed to reduce shrinkage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional solutions made of wire, sheet metal, wood or plastic will absolutely remain important. There is no doubt about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the truly strategic levers are increasingly found in software, data, sensors and intelligent systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or to put it another way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The store is becoming measurable.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>And that is fundamentally changing retail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Cannot Be Measured Cannot Be Managed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Retail margins are under pressure. At the same time, expectations regarding processes, availability, staff productivity, loss prevention and customer experience continue to increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under these conditions, companies that cannot precisely analyse costs, processes or operational weaknesses will struggle to optimise them effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why technologies that create transparency are becoming increasingly important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>data analytics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>intelligent sensors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tracking solutions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>digital interfaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>connected POS systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years ago, manufacturing industries were heavily discussing \u201cIndustry 4.0\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we transfer this thinking to retail, we have clearly already arrived at \u201cRetail 4.0\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And with the growing use of AI, we may already be moving towards \u201cRetail 5.0\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology Alone Is Not Enough<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite all technological possibilities, one important fact remains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technology rarely solves problems automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Successful solutions only emerge when technology, processes, ergonomics, user guidance, loss prevention and operational realities are considered together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is exactly where many of today\u2019s retail challenges arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern stores are becoming increasingly complex:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-checkout zones, smart carts, hybrid checkout concepts, digital services and AI-based systems must not only work technically. They also need to be understandable, efficient and manageable for customers, employees and operators alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that is precisely why simply purchasing isolated technologies is often not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What really matters is the overall system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EuroShop 2026: My Personal Conclusion <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>EuroShop 2026 made one thing very clear to me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The digital transformation of retail is no longer a vision of the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is already happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For retailers and solution providers who continue to postpone entering this digital world \u2014 for whatever reason \u2014 the long-term outlook may become increasingly difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The earlier companies start engaging with these topics, the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not perfectly.<br>Not completely.<br>But pragmatically and with a willingness to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because in the end, there is really only one mindset left:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Just give it a go.<br>It might turn out well.<\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EuroShop 2026 clearly demonstrated how rapidly retail is evolving: AI, smart stores, sensor technologies and intelligent POS systems are becoming key strategic success factors.
