It Is a Behavioural Space."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The concept of the \u201cSCO as a behavioural space\u201d fundamentally changes how we understand self-checkout systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-checkout systems have long become part of everyday retail operations.<br><br>In more and more stores, customers are now performing tasks that were previously handled exclusively by checkout staff: scanning items, registering products, paying and leaving the store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advantages are obvious:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>greater flexibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>better scalability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shorter waiting times<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more efficient processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the growing use of self-checkout systems is not only changing the checkout process itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It is also changing human behaviour.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>And this is something the retail industry still discusses far too little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shrinkage Does Not Happen by Accident<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In my article \u201cAn Open Door May Even Tempt a Saint!\u201d (see also <a href=\"https:\/\/dr-rainer-eckert.de\/en\/inventory-losses-germany-2024-retail-shrinkage\/\">https:\/\/dr-rainer-eckert.de\/en\/inventory-losses-germany-2024-retail-shrinkage\/<\/a>), I explained how strongly shrinkage is influenced by situational behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us take another look at the latest EHI figures for 2024 (see also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Downloads\/Leseproben\/EHI-Studie_Inventurdifferenzen_2025_Leseprobe.pdf\">https:\/\/www.ehi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Downloads\/Leseproben\/EHI-Studie_Inventurdifferenzen_2025_Leseprobe.pdf<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u20ac4.95 billion in shrinkage within the German retail sector<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>of which \u20ac2.95 billion was caused by customers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and a further \u20ac0.89 billion by employees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, according to EHI, there were in 2024:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>around 930,000 checkout systems in Germany overall<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>but only approximately 20,000 self-checkout systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that SCOs currently account for only around two percent of all checkout systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with the continued expansion of self-checkout technology, the share of SCO systems is expected to reach only around three percent by 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first glance, one might therefore conclude:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact of SCOs on overall retail losses is still comparatively limited today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this is exactly where the misconception begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the SCO as a Behavioural Space Changes the Dynamics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to EHI estimates, the theft rate at self-checkout systems is around 15 to 30 percent higher than at traditional staffed checkouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this fundamentally changes the dynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because with every additional SCO, it is not only the number of systems that increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk of shrinkage and losses grows disproportionately as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or to put it another way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The share of losses grows faster than the share of technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The crucial question therefore is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is this happening?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The simple answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Because behaviour changes.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">People Behave Differently Towards Technology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At traditional staffed checkouts, people interact with people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At self-checkout systems, people primarily interact with technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first glance, this may sound trivial. However, the psychological consequences are significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because perceptions, inhibitions and justification patterns often change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical effects may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>lower inhibitions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>actions being perceived differently (\u201cI am only tricking the system.\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>accidental behaviour becoming habit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>habit eventually turning into intent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is precisely why a purely technical view of self-checkout systems falls short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An SCO is not simply a piece of furniture equipped with a scanner, screen and payment module.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It is a behavioural space.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Key Question Is Not: \u201cHow Can We Control This Better?\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many discussions about self-checkout revolve around control:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>more cameras<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more sensors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more AI<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>better fraud detection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>smarter exit systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these technologies are important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they do not automatically solve the underlying problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the key question is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow can we control this space better?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But rather:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cWhat kinds of behaviour does this system create \u2014 and how do we influence it?\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept of the \u201cSCO as a behavioural space\u201d helps us to view self-checkout zones not only from a technical perspective, but also from a psychological one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is exactly where self-checkout becomes far more than just a technology project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It becomes a question of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>psychology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>behavioural patterns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ergonomics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>user guidance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>store design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>visibility and presence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>perception<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>situational conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Three-Group Model Helps Explain the Situation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A useful framework is the well-known three-group model:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>some customers are fundamentally honest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>some are fundamentally willing to offend<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the majority react situationally<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And it is precisely this situational majority that determines whether a system remains stable or becomes problematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The logical consequence for SCO zones must therefore be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>minimise opportunities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>make detection risks visible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>maintain visible staff presence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>design intuitive processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduce uncertainty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>consider psychological effects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cOpportunity makes thieves\u201d is not a moral problem. It is a systemic one.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Behaviour Is the Result of Conditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-checkout zones actively shape behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With every layout.<br>With every user interface.<br>With every technical decision.<br>With every operational process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Behaviour does not emerge randomly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the result of conditions and framework design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this is exactly why SCO zones must be considered holistically \u2014 technically, organisationally and psychologically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the influence of many SCO systems on overall retail losses may still appear limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But with every additional system, their impact grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The real question is therefore no longer whether retail companies should engage with these topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But how early.<\/strong><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Self-checkout systems are far more than just technology.
