As the range of self-service technologies continues to grow, so does the temptation to start by looking at hardware, suppliers or technical possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the key question should be a different one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which self-service solution fits the store, its customers and its processes?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because self-service is not about simply picking the most attractive card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology is not the first step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-service projects often begin with very specific questions: Which devices should we use? How many stations do we need? Which supplier should we choose? What is the investment budget, and how quickly can the solution be rolled out?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of these questions matter \u2013 but they are not the first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A small city-centre store with high footfall, small baskets and limited space has very different requirements from a large supermarket where customers do their weekly shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The customer base also plays a crucial role. A store with a high proportion of regular customers operates differently from a location serving travellers, tourists or constantly changing footfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also different requirements for <strong>service, speed, accessibility and Loss Prevention<\/strong>. Where shrink is a major concern, different control mechanisms are needed from those in a store where short waiting times are the main priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understand the process first<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before deciding on the technology, a number of fundamental questions should therefore be answered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What are the typical basket sizes?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How much space is available?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which customer groups use the store?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How familiar are customers with digital processes?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What role does staff play?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where do queues or process issues occur today?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which products regularly cause difficulties?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How high is the risk of operating errors or theft?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which information is needed for management and optimisation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How accessible does the overall process need to be?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only once these parameters are clear does it make sense to decide which self-service solution is right for the particular store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which self-service solution is the right one?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Self-Checkout (SCO)<\/strong> can speed up the payment process and create additional capacity. However, it only works well when layout, staff support, user guidance and Loss Prevention are considered as part of one overall system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Self-Scanning<\/strong> moves item scanning into the shopping journey itself. Customers typically use a handheld scanner provided by the retailer. This can significantly reduce pressure at the checkout \u2013 provided that the customer base, control processes and infrastructure are suited to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Smart Shoppers<\/strong>, or <strong>intelligent shopping trolleys<\/strong>, combine the trolley with digital functions. Products can be scanned during the shopping journey, information can be displayed and additional services can be integrated. Whether this approach is suitable depends, among other things, on basket size, customer expectations and economics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scan &amp; Go<\/strong> follows a similar principle but usually relies on the customer\u2019s own smartphone. It can provide a highly convenient experience, but it requires suitable digital infrastructure, strong customer acceptance and a well-designed control logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, of course, the answer does not always have to be a single technology (see also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.self-checkout-initiative.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/11\/EHI-SCO-Innovation-Guide_EN_digital.pdf\">EHI: SCO Inspiration Guide<\/a>). Depending on the store format, a <strong>combination of different solutions<\/strong> may be the better option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The wrong self-service solution creates new problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most advanced technology is not automatically the best choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A self-service solution that does not fit the store can create additional complexity: more staff interventions, customer uncertainty, greater control effort or new operational vulnerabilities (see also <a href=\"https:\/\/dr-rainer-eckert.de\/en\/sco-attendant\/\">Retail Engineering: The role of the attendant<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real task is therefore not simply to select a technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is to understand first <strong>which problem needs to be solved for which store format.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only then should the technology follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Structure before investment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good self-service planning therefore looks beyond the device itself. It considers the entire system of store format, customers, space, processes, staff, technology, data and risk management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or, more simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Structure before investment.<\/strong><br><strong>Context before technology.<\/strong><br><strong>System before device.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is where the decision for the right self-service solution begins.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCO, Self-Scanning, Smart Shopper or Scan &#038; Go?
